How To Stop Putting Off Your Life

“I love deadlines. I love the whooshing sound they make as they whiz by." - Douglas Adams

Procrastination is a serious thing to be saddled with. It can put your whole life on hold. But, on a more subtle level, it wreaks havoc on our confidence and self-esteem. So where does it come from? And, more importantly, how do we heal it?

Well, the first thing I want to point out is...

It's Not Your Fault

The difficulties we experience in our lives are all the result of the conditioning that we all received, when we did have any ability to reject or even resist it. The majority of all your adult problems started as some childhood trauma that just got more and more engrained as time wore on.

Recognizing that it isn't your fault, and that you were programmed to be this way is the first step in healing it. That little bit of good news means...

It Isn't a Personal Failing - It's Learned Behavior

That means it can be unlearned or, more accurately, untrained. And, for this kind of deep retraining, you you don't need a lot of willpower. Thank God. Once you recognize that it isn't a character flaw the next step is to acknowledge that, because of some trauma that is buried deep in the unconscious, your nervous system is afraid of something. When the nervous system is anticipating some kind of pain, it can get very, very clever in how it keeps you from doing whatever it is you are wanting or needing to do.

  • It can actually feel physically impossible to take any action

  • It can distract you with social media, games, entertainment and other mindless activities

  • It can also distract you with insignificant tasks, running errands or even doing the dishes

  • And it can also be more subtle, like a feeling that you should be doing something else.

OK, so much for the symptoms (which you already know very well. How about a cure, G? It is not an absolutely necessity to analyze your childhood and dredge up all the difficult stuff. The way I do it is far more gentle. Since this is a blog and not a book let me show you the best place to start.

I always start with large doses of self-acceptance

Now, for most people, self-acceptance is the last thing they feel they can do. I mean how can I accept myself when I keep screwing myself with procrastination?

I will demonstrate how I use EFT (aka Meridian Tapping) to approach self-acceptance, while still stuck in the unhappy behavior. And it is way easier than you think. You just have to go past the mind and talk directly to the body. And that is what EFT does so very well.
